Armstrong Glen provided civil engineering design services for Phase I, II, III and IIIA of the Bennettsville Streetscape project. The project reconstructed streets, curbs, sidewalks, and utilities in a ten-block downtown area of Bennettsville, including a portion of SC Route 9, a major South Carolina east-west artery. The four phases include over 14,200 linear feet of sidewalk construction or improvements in a downtown business district.
- Conceptual plans were prepared and presented to stakeholders. Through these plans, business owners were able to voice concerns about delivery and customer access. Designs were prepared with special consideration to access during and after construction.
- Confined right-of-ways, as encountered on the Bennettsville project, present special design challenges to meet ADA compliance. Sidewalks to serve storefronts which are substantially higher than, street grade require innovative design to meet ADA minimum requirements. Truncated pavers were used at all crossings.
- For pedestrian safety, medians were added at some of the wider crossings. Also, building downspouts were routed under sidewalks and discharged into gutters with special curb castings or directly into catch basins, to minimize freezing on sidewalks.
- To minimize damage from heavy truck traffic, radii were widened and reinforced curbs were designed along with 6” thick sidewalks.
Phase I, II, III and IIIA construction is complete. Construction costs for Phases I, II III and IIIA: $2,625,000.
