Located in the “East Forest” area of Charlotte, Burtonwood Circle received frequent flooding during significant storm events. The purpose of the Burtonwood Storm Drain Improvement project was to alleviate street flooding and prevent structural flooding.
For this project, Armstrong Glen, P.C. provided hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for upgrades to the existing storm drain system. As part of this project, 300 linear feet of open channel was modeled using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS program. Also, 360 linear feet of closed pipe system was modeled using the Hydraflow Storm Sewers program. This work also required careful coordination with the homeowners impacted by the proposed improvements.
Proposed improvements included new culverts, curb and gutter, and channel grading. This project also involved the use of hybrid grade control structures along the new section of open channel. Additional work for this project included field surveying and construction phase consultation. Construction cost was $300,000.
