Located in the “Collinswood” area of Charlotte, The Conway/Briabend Storm Drainage project encompasses a fully-developed, 225-acre urban watershed. The purpose of the project is to reduce flooding, impede erosion, and provide detention for increased future runoff. For this project, Armstrong Glen, P.C. provided hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for a new storm drainage network along with the design of stream channel-restoration techniques to stabilize perennial streams within the project area. The proposed improvements included 120 linear feet of 6’ by 4’ reinforced concrete box culvert, 583 linear feet of 6’ by 5’ reinforced concrete box culvert, 134 linear feet of 9’ by 5’ reinforced concrete box culvert, 2500 linear feet of storm drain piping, 53,000 cubic yards of cut to create two detention facilities, and two outlet structures. A weekend closure of South Boulevard at Briabend Drive was required for installation of a new box culvert. Existing fiber optic conduits were supported with temporary wide flange steel beams during the culvert installation. The improvements were designed to City of Charlotte design standards and provide 100- year protection from first floor structure flooding. Construction Cost was $ 2,900,000.
Project Duration: March 2004 to June 2012.
